Stops urine marking

The urine of an intact male cat has a distinctive, persistent odour, and marking is done on vertical surfaces indoors. Neutered before the habit sets in, most cats never start marking at all.

Fewer fights, less FIV and FeLV

FIV is transmitted mainly through bites between males competing over territory and females. Reducing roaming and fighting is the most effective way to reduce that exposure.

Quick surgery, short recovery

It is a brief external procedure with a usually rapid recovery. Even so, your cat stays with us until he has fully come round from the anaesthetic.

How the process works

Short, but with the same preparation as any surgery under general anaesthesia.

Pre-surgical consultation
We examine your cat, confirm both testicles have descended, check age and weight, and explain the costs. If you go ahead, the cost is deducted from the procedure.
Pre-anaesthetic blood work
We assess kidney and liver function before anaesthesia. In cats the kidney deserves the closest attention, even in young and apparently healthy animals.
Surgery with monitoring
The procedure takes place in our own operating theatre with monitored anaesthesia. In routine cases it is a short operation with no abdominal approach.
Recovery somewhere quiet
Your cat recovers with us under supervision, in a low-noise space, already on pain relief. He only goes home once he is fully awake and stable.
Care at home
He should stay indoors for the following days, with no jumping onto high furniture. Swap fine litter for paper or large-grain litter for a few days, so it does not stick to the wound.

How do I book my cat's neutering?

Book a pre-surgical consultation and mention that it is for neutering a male cat. Surgery is never scheduled without that prior assessment. If you go ahead with us, the cost of the consultation is deducted from the procedure.

At what age should a cat be neutered?

Usually before urine marking sets in, because it is considerably easier to prevent the habit than to make it disappear later. The exact age depends on development and weight, and we confirm it at the consultation.

He already marks territory. Is it still worth it?

Yes, but be realistic about the outcome. In most cats marking greatly reduces or stops after neutering; in a minority the habit is already established and persists. All the other health benefits apply equally.

My cat never goes outside. Does he need neutering?

Yes, and that is precisely the main reason: it is the intact indoor cat who marks the walls at home. Beyond that, it is while searching for females that many indoor cats first try to get out.

How long does recovery take?

Usually quick. He should stay indoors for the following days with no jumping onto high places, and it helps to temporarily swap fine litter for paper or large-grain litter so it does not stick to the wound.

What if one testicle has not descended?

That is cryptorchidism and it changes the procedure: a retained testicle carries an increased risk of becoming tumorous, and removing it requires a more complex approach, sometimes abdominal. We assess and explain this at the pre-surgical consultation.

Will he put on weight?

Energy requirements drop after neutering, and in indoor cats that shows quickly. With an adjusted food portion and encouragement to move, he does not have to gain weight. We adjust this with you at the follow-up.

I also have a female cat at home. Is neutering one of them enough?

To prevent litters, yes. But each benefits for their own reasons: in her, the reduced risk of mammary tumours and the end of repeated seasons. We have a dedicated page on cat spaying.
