An unspayed cat comes into season repeatedly through the breeding season, and keeps coming back into season until she mates. For the household, that means constant calling, restlessness and attempts to get out. For the cat, it means risk: road accidents, fights and the diseases passed on outdoors. The laparoscopic option

Spaying can be done laparoscopically, through two or three incisions a few millimetres long instead of opening the abdominal wall. Less pain afterwards, a lower risk of wound complications and a shorter recovery.

Handling adapted to the species

A tense cat complicates both the anaesthetic and the recovery. We work with a calm approach, minimal restraint and a short wait, because a cat's stress is not a detail of comfort: it is a clinical variable.

Blood work before anaesthesia

We assess kidney and liver function before anaesthesia. In cats the kidneys deserve particular attention, being the organ where chronic disease sets in most silently.

Less exposure to the diseases of the street

Escaping while in season, and the fights that follow, are the main route of transmission for FIV and FeLV. Ending the seasons removes most of the reason she wants to go out.

How the process works

The path is the same as for any planned surgery, with the adjustments the species calls for.

Pre-surgical consultation
We examine her, confirm her age and general condition, answer your questions and explain the costs. If you choose to go ahead, the cost of this consultation is deducted from the procedure.
Pre-anaesthetic blood work
We take blood to assess kidney and liver function. If any value is abnormal, we investigate before anaesthetising rather than going ahead regardless.
Surgery with continuous monitoring
The procedure takes place in our own operating theatre, with mechanical ventilation and anaesthesia monitored from start to finish: heart and respiratory rate, oxygenation, temperature and blood pressure.
Recovery somewhere quiet
She recovers with us under supervision, in a space with little noise, already on pain relief. She only goes home once the recovery has settled.
Check-ups and stitch removal
We check the wound in the first few days and remove the stitches at the agreed time. During that period she should stay indoors and must not lick the sutures.

What changes after spaying

In a cat, the difference is felt mostly in behaviour and in exposure to the outdoors.

Greatly reduces the urge to escape, and with it the risk of being hit by a car
Fewer fights with other cats, which are the main route of transmission for FIV and FeLV

How do I book my cat's spay?

Book a pre-surgical consultation and mention that it is for spaying a female cat. Surgery is not scheduled without that prior assessment. If you go ahead with us, the cost of the consultation is deducted from the procedure.

Do you perform laparoscopic spays?

Yes. A laparoscopic spay uses two or three incisions a few millimetres long instead of opening the abdominal wall. In cats, who tend to recover quickly anyway, the advantage lies mainly in less discomfort and a lower risk of wound complications. We confirm at the pre-surgical consultation whether it is the right route.

At what age can a cat be spayed?

Usually before the first season, and cats can come into season earlier than most people expect. Since the exact age depends on how each cat is developing, we confirm it at the pre-surgical consultation.

My cat never leaves the house. Is spaying worth it?

Yes. The health benefits, such as the reduced risk of mammary tumours and the removal of the pyometra risk, do not depend on her going out. And it is during a season that many indoor cats first try to get out.

Can it be done while she is in season?

We prefer to avoid it, because during a season the tissues carry a richer blood supply and the risk of bleeding is higher. If your cat is in season, we will assess at the consultation when the best time is.

Are mammary tumours in cats different from those in dogs?

Yes, and it is an important difference: in cats, most mammary tumours are malignant. It is one of the reasons early spaying carries so much weight in this species.

How long does recovery take?

Cats usually recover quickly, but it is still abdominal surgery. She should stay indoors until the stitches come out, with no jumping onto high furniture and no access to the wound.

Will she put on weight afterwards?

Energy requirements drop, so the same amount of food becomes too much. With an adjusted portion and some encouragement to move, she does not have to gain weight. We adjust it with you at the follow-up.

What if I have a male cat at home?

It is worth neutering him too, for reasons of his own: marking territory with urine, escaping and fighting. We have a page dedicated to cat neutering.
