What is included and what happens during the visit

A veterinary consultation at Serpa Pinto Clinic takes 20 to 30 minutes and includes a full physical exam covering your pet's weight, teeth, skin, heart and lungs. When further tests are needed, we can usually run X-rays, ultrasound and blood work the same day, in our in-house laboratory. We see patients by appointment only, at Rua Serpa Pinto 542, in Porto.

What happens during the consultation?

A routine consultation usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, and may run longer if the clinical situation calls for it.

Initial conversation
We start by understanding the reason for the visit, your pet's history, diet, routine, and what has changed since the last consultation.
Full physical exam
We assess weight, teeth, skin and coat, eyes and ears, and listen to the heart and lungs. This is the step where most early changes show up.
Further tests, if needed
When the physical exam raises questions, we move on to blood work, digital radiology or ultrasound. In most cases these can be done the same day.
Diagnosis and a plan explained
We explain what we found, the available options and the cost of each one before proceeding. The decision is always yours.
Records and follow-up
The consultation report, test results and vaccinations are recorded in the Digitail app. If follow-up is needed, we arrange it there and then.

Why book a routine consultation?

We recommend at least one consultation per year. For senior pets, ideally every six months.

Do I need to book an appointment?

Yes. We work strictly by appointment so that each pet gets adequate consultation time and waiting is kept short. You can book online, through the Digitail app, or by phone on +351 223 239 804.

How long does a veterinary consultation take?

Usually between 20 and 30 minutes. It may take longer if tests are needed or if the clinical situation calls for it.

Can tests be done on the same day as the consultation?

In most cases, yes. We have digital radiology, ultrasound and a laboratory on site, which means results can come back during your visit.

How often should my pet be seen?

At least once a year for healthy adult pets. For senior pets or those with a chronic condition, we recommend every six months.

Are blood tests really necessary?

Not always. We request blood work at check-ups, before surgery, and whenever symptoms persist, because it can reveal kidney, liver or endocrine changes before visible signs appear. We always explain the reason before proceeding.

What should I bring to the consultation?

Your pet's vaccination record or passport, if you have one, and reports from previous consultations at another clinic. If the visit is about digestive or urinary issues, bringing a recent sample can save time.

Do you handle emergencies?

During opening hours, call +351 223 239 804 before coming in so we can prepare for your arrival. Outside those hours, we recommend the nearest 24-hour veterinary hospital.

Do you see cats and exotic pets?

Yes. Besides dogs and cats, we offer consultations for exotic pets. For cats, there is also a feline medicine consultation, with an approach adapted to the species.
